The Opportunity
Embarking on a specialty internship is a significant step in your veterinary career. The 12-month Oncology Internship based at VSS’ Underwood hospital offers the opportunity to work as part of VSS’s Oncology Service, and be integrally involved in all aspects of managing the service’s clinical oncology case load. The intern will be exposed to, and develop skills associated with, all aspects of oncology practice, including clinical case management and decision-making, diagnostics, staging, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, medical record keeping, and client and referring veterinarian communication. The intern will be assigned increasing levels of clinical responsibility based on experience and progress. The intern will also participate in regular clinical rounds, journal club, and didactic seminars. Additionally, there is the opportunity to engage in clinical research, dependent upon the individual’s interests. This internship program would potentially suit both recent graduates and more experienced veterinarians seeking to enhance their skills in oncology, perhaps with a mind to pursuing residency training. Many of VSS’ interns have gone onto successfully complete competitive and challenging residency training programs, becoming registered veterinary specialists.
About Us
Veterinary Specialist Services (VSS) is a well-established and renowned small animal referral organisation based in south east Queensland, with hospitals located in Underwood, Carrara and Jindalee. VSS offers a broad range of veterinary specialty services, with a spectrum of advanced diagnostic modalities and therapeutic interventions available.
The Oncology Service is supported by specialists in internal medicine, surgery, cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, radiology, and emergency and critical care, as well as an invaluable team of veterinary nurse and administration staff. The Oncology Service also has a myriad of tools available to augment case management, including a cytotoxic drug safety hood, ultrasound, digital x-ray, CT, MRI, endoscopy/cystoscopy/bronchoscopy, and fluoroscopy.
VSS’ commitment to the future of the veterinary industry, and our emphasis on professional and personal development, is evident through our contributions to veterinary student education, veterinary nurse training, rotating and specialty internship programs, and residency training programs, as well as the continuing education opportunities we regularly host and contribute to.
