The Cardiology Internship:

You will be mentored by 2 Cardiology Specialists and 1 Cardiology focused Medicine Specialist, assisting with the medical management of cardiac cases. There will be an important role for the cardiology intern during cardiac interventions, including post operative care and client communication. SASH sees a broad range of Cardiology cases and the department is well resourced with state-of-the-art equipment, including a brand new Phillips Epiq CVx echocardiographic machine, GE Vivid I, digital electrocardiography, holter monitors and cardiology interventional equipment. Imaging is of the highest standard with digital radiology, MRI, CT, Xray and Ultrasound all readily available. This position will see you working closely with the broader SASH team including: internal medicine, surgery, emergency and critical care, anaesthesia, neurology, ophthalmology, dermatology, radiology and oncology.

The internship has been structured to prepare you for a Residency in small animal Cardiology. This will include intern and cardiologist lead didactic learning once weekly and presentation requirements. The program will run for 12 months, with the option of extending to 18 months if appropriate. This allows you adequate time to complete guided project(s) in the hospital’s clinical research areas. The findings of such research are encouraged to be presented at a scientific meeting and published in a peer-reviewed journal.

You will play a pivotal role in daily rounds and client communication. Assistance in preparation towards membership of the ANZCVS is also available.

Candidates must hold a degree enabling them to register as a veterinarian in NSW with the VPB. Other desired attributes include:

  • Completion of a one year rotating internship (or equivalent experience)
  • Good echocardiographic skills
