About the role:

We are seeking a highly motivated, positive and experienced vet nurse for the role of shift team leader. This is a senior part-time role based on a minimum of 32hrs per week, with more hours available by negotiation, as well as through afterhours and overtime opportunities.

This role provides direction, support, mentoring and training for the vet nurse and reception team on rostered shifts and involves senior vet nursing duties as well as assisting the operations manager and inventory and marketing manager.

We provide 3 weeks of transitional training shifts to ensure that the successful candidate has a smooth transition into this leadership role, with guidance during this period from our management team and the direct line manager that oversees this position.

Training is conducted with the management and leadership team, and shadowing shifts are provided to give you the time and support required to ensure you are ready to meet shift expectations. Training, support and oversight by the management team and senior nursing team is always available well beyond the initial induction timeframes to ensure you continually feel confident to achieve success and provide the right leadership, support and direction for the nursing and reception teams on your designated shifts in conjunction with the operations manager and vet team manager.

Communication portals/systems for the nurse, vet and reception teams allows for all day support and a wealth of experience to call on at all times, in conjunction with the physical presence that is accessible on each and every shift. With a team that spans 3 clinics and over 25 staff you have a foundation that is conducive to success and will ensure your ongoing growth and development in your pet health care career.

This position is ready for an immediate start.

Role Responsibilities Include:

  • Carrying out vet nurse duties as required, supporting the veterinarians (including but not limited to: anaesthetic monitoring, animal handling, IV catheter placement and blood collection);
  • Providing direction, training and scheduling on shifts to suit business and staffing requirements;
  • Ensure that your shift is well managed, overseeing the reception and vet nursing teams, and delivering on the expectations set by the management team;
  • Ensuring that inventory and stock levels are adequate for operational purposes, ordering as necessary;
  • Decision making on shifts to overcome challenging scenarios and obtain the best outcome for patients, clients and the team, in line with business goals & protocols;
  • Identify staff training needs, and work with the operations manager to hire and retain existing staff and maintain a positive and inclusive working environment;
  • Providing exceptional customer service and care to all clients and patients;
  • Take a positive and objective approach to client interactions with an outlook to ensure client satisfaction at all times;
  • Providing an excellent level of patient care and customer service, leading by example and setting expectations for the reception and vet nursing team;
  • Assist the operations manager and inventory & marketing manager with reception, inventory, social media and administration tasks as required;
  • Daily scheduling of appointments and follow-ups liaising with the team to ensure the day is organised and clients/patients are appropriately prioritized;
  • Liaising between our team and third-party external pet health care partners;
  • Handling of cash, EFTPOS and other payments;
  • End of day/shift balances;
  • Using scheduling tools to manage communication between team members and clinics;
  • Requesting results, samples and other documents from third parties;
  • The ability to deal with emotional and challenging client interactions;
  • Communication with the team regarding incoming emergencies, client expectations and follow-up call feedback;
  • Willingness and ability to expand your knowledge.

Key Criteria:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a vet nurse;
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a leadership role within the veterinary industry;
  • Must currently hold a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or equivalent;
  • Is proficient in medical procedures such as IV catheter placement and blood collection, and monitoring anaesthesia;
  • Has a strong knowledge base and understanding of veterinary nursing procedures & provides a high standard of professional care for clients and patients.
  • Excellent animal handling skills;
  • Enthusiastic, positive and motivated individual who has a keen problem-solving ability and can-do attitude;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Experience with Ezyvet highly desirable;
  • Practice management experience highly desirable;
  • Flexibility to work weekends & public holidays.
