Job Description

Have you heard about Capital Paws Veterinary Group in Canberra?

We are a co-operative of locally owned and operated vet practices, with an approach to veterinary life that is totally unique.

We are currently looking for a vet to join our Kippax Veterinary Hospital team.

We are very keen to invite the 2024/2025 New Graduates to apply. We have a large team of experienced vets to support our new graduates and love all the modern concepts that new graduates can introduce to our practice.

We are very excited to now be able to offer a more structured new graduate program. This includes one day rostered off clinics a month to rotate through the clinics upskilling in various areas depending on where the expertise is, new graduate lunch time rounds on a monthly basis with other new and recent graduates in our group and a formalised mentoring program. We will pay above award and also help with some of the initial costs to get started in your career. We work hard to ensure that our organisation is a very safe and supportive place for you to begin what we belief is a wonderful job.

We would of course, welcome anyone with experience to apply as well. We would love to have you contribute your expertise to our clinic as well as develop any other areas of interest that you have. We have the capacity to offer extremely flexible working hours and are happy to consider people looking for either part-time or full time work. We do also have a vet going on maternity leave shortly so if you are looking for some short term work, please also get in touch.

At Capital Paws, we truly value our veterinary colleagues and have built practice teams that are rich with highly engaged, experienced vets who give excellent patient care, whilst enjoying satisfying and rewarding careers. We provide supportive environments for more recent graduates and offer genuine leadership opportunities for senior vets, up to and including partnership.

We currently have thirteen directors involved with Capital Paws, all of whom live in Canberra and surrounds and work in our hospitals. Each of us are happy and content in our veterinary work and apart from looking after our patients, our greatest motivation is to provide excellent opportunities for our fellow vets and nurses to thrive in this rewarding vocation.

We have vets with a wide range of special interests including, behaviour, surgery, imaging, dentistry, exotics, internal medicine (radioactive iodine ward), dermatology, physiotherapy and practice management. These skills are readily shared across the practices and allow for mentorship in just about any area of interest.

We now also have a referral service as part of our group with a specialist surgeon and a visiting medicine service and a weekend emergency clinic. Both of these services have made it possible to provide our patients with the next level of care throughout the week.

Outside of clinical support, we also provide guidance when it comes to work/life balance and how to manage stress and anxiety - skills that are so important in our industry.

If you come to work with us, we can cater to your strengths and interests by finding a role that is the right fit for you. Given that our practice owner has a family, we are very flexible and understanding when it comes to working around the other commitments you have in life.

In joining us, you become a member of a diverse community of friendly vets with a wide range of clinical and life experience. This has meant that we can have special interest groups in such areas as ultrasonography, medicine, and behaviour, however, also in tennis, trivia, mountain biking, rock climbing, bouldering, netball, bushwalking, skiing, back country snow sports and baking! We have an immediate social and professional network for you to become a part of.

Naturally, we are keen for you to engage in continuing education, which can range from the regular internal sessions that take place over beer and takeaway, through to support for study for memberships and everything in between. In addition to conference fees, we also provide a daily allowance for travel and accommodation.

Kippax Vet Hospital is now also an accredited AVA Employer of Choice as well as recently being reaccredited as an ASAV Hospital of Excellence.

We use our skills and knowledge to contribute to organisations such as Pets in the Park, Domestic Violence Support, and local animal rescue organisations. We also run our own charitable organisation, “The Canberra Mob”, that provides animal health programs in indigenous communities in the Northern Territory. We undertake two NT trips each year and many of our vets and nurses have spent weeks doing desexing and parasite treatment programs in the remote locations that we visit.

We believe that what we have to offer is unique in the Australian veterinary landscape. At the moment, we are looking for a vet to join the 50 who currently make up our community. We would love to hear from you to further discuss the opportunity for you to contribute to our team, as we support you to develop your professional and personal interests.

Canberra is a terrific place to live. It is a beautiful city of lakes and natural bushland. We have the best network of walking, running and mountain bike trails in Australia. There are great restaurants and cafes, along with innumerable clubs catering to every lifestyle interest. Many of our vets spend summer weekends at the south coast and winter weekends at the snow, and there is no better place for bringing up kids!

We encourage you to look at the website, Facebook and Instagram page for Kippax Veterinary Hospital.

Please send your expression of interest to Dr Alison Taylor at alisont@kippaxvet.com.au
